First Candidate Endorsed by Better Choices

Tweet announcing Cameron Dearlove's endorsement

Better Choices has endorsed its first candidate. That's because we've been working hard for the past month getting the word out about our campaign! Allow us to tell you a bit about what we've been doing, and how you can help us out.

Last month, we sent a letter of introduction to all incumbents and declared candidates for municipal councils and school boards. Shortly afterwards, we issued a news release announcing our campaign to our community. In response, we got some good media coverage, received submissions from five candidates asking for our endorsement, and made our first endorsement decision!

Media Coverage
You can read our news release on the website of Exchange Magazine, which reprinted it verbatim. The Record published a story about us with some puzzling comments from Regional Councillor Sean Strickland in it, on February. This gave our Executive member Paul Cyr an opportunity to write a letter to the editor to set the record straight about our objectives. KOOL-FM's Brian Bourke wrote a column about us in The Waterloo Chronicle. People are talking about us!

Our First Endorsed Candidate
Meet Cameron Dearlove

We are especially proud of our first endorsed candidate, Cameron Dearlove. Cameron is running for Regional Council in Kitchener. Four people will be elected to Regional Council from Kitchener, and it will be tough to beat any of the four incumbents, assuming they all run again (as of this writing, none of the incumbents have declared their candidacy). But the Better Choices Executive were very impressed with Cameron’s questionnaire and our interview with him. He is an articulate, knowledgeable candidate with solid progressive credentials and a dedicated campaign team already in place. We think he has a shot at winning! Read more about him at

As of this writing, we have received four more candidate questionnaires, and are expecting to receive a few more in the next week. We will review them and make decisions on these endorsement requests at our April Executive meeting. Do you have opinions on who we should or should not endorse? Please drop us a line at or use one of our forms to give us a full review of a candidate.

Public Meeting April 30th
Finally, we have decided to hold a public meeting on April 30th to introduce our campaign to more people and invite organizations to support our goals. The idea is get more people and organizations involved in this campaign, so that when we have our slate of elected candidates in the Fall, they will be willing to tell all their friends to vote for candidates because they understand and support our process for endorsing candidates. Please plan to be there, and help spread the word to your friends.

    Wednesday, April 30th, 7-9pm
    Unifor Meeting Hall
    600 Wabanaki Dr, Kitchener

We hope to see you there!
