You've probably heard that Teaching Assistants at both University of Toronto and York University are both on strike. The issues at the root of the strikes by CUPE 3902 and 3903 are common to all Ontario universities: we have the highest tuition fees, the largest class sizes, and the lowest funding in the country. Teaching assistants and contract faculty are working for poverty wages and lack any job security.
This month, in addition to all our regular reports, we will hear from a contract faculty member at Wilfrid Laurier University, Jason Sager. Jason knows all about the precarious work of university teachers: he has taught courses part-time for eight years since completing his PhD. Jason will put the Toronto CUPE strikes in perspective, and give a personal account of the experience of teaching in Ontario's universities today.
We will also be conducting elections to fill two vacancies on our Executive - one for 2nd Vice President, and one Executive-at-large - and two Committee Chair vacancies: Health & Safety and Social Services. You can read details about these positions, and our process for electing people, in our Bylaws.
Remember, you don't have to be a Labour Council affiliate or even a union member to attend our meetings!
